How to do Raw-Edge Appliqué

Raw-edge appliqué is one of the most versatile and beginner-friendly quilting techniques you can add to your skill set. It’s perfect for personalizing quilts, adding unique shapes, and intricate designs without the need for complicated piecing.

Whether you’re brand-new to appliqué or looking for a faster way to add shapes and lettering to your projects, raw-edge appliqué is a method that delivers great results with minimal fuss.

What Is Raw-Edge Appliqué?

Raw-edge appliqué is the process of attaching a fabric shape to a background fabric without turning the edges under. Instead, the cut edge of the fabric remains visible (“raw”), and you secure it with a straight stitch, zigzag stitch, or decorative stitch.

For this method, I recommend Pellon 725 Paper-Backed Heavy Duty Wonder-Under, a fusible interfacing that makes the process quick and accurate. This paper-backed fusible allows you to trace your templates, iron the shapes onto your fabric, and then peel off the backing before adhering them to your project.

Why Quilters Love Raw-Edge Appliqué

Quilters of all levels gravitate toward raw-edge appliqué because it’s:

Fast and approachable – You can skip the extra steps of needle-turn or turned-edge appliqué.
Beginner-friendly – No need for advanced sewing skills to get beautiful results.
Highly customizable – It’s the easiest way to add curves and complex shapes to your work.
Perfect for using scraps – Those little fabric treasures finally have a home.
Visually striking – The raw edge can add texture and personality to your quilt.

General Directions for Raw-Edge Appliqué

Below is my go-to process for raw-edge appliqué, using Pellon 725 Paper-Backed Heavy Duty Wonder-Under for clean, accurate shapes.

  1. Print Your Templates (or draw something) – Set your printer to actual size (100%) and single-sided printing.
  2. Check Scale – Measure the 1″ square on your template page with a grid ruler to confirm it’s accurate.
  3. Cut Out Templates – Cut out each template shape.
  4. Trace Templates – Place each template (number side up) on the paper side of your fusible interfacing. Trace and label with the corresponding number.
  5. Rough Cut – Cut each traced shape about ¼” outside the drawn lines.
  6. Fuse to Fabric – Place the textured side of the interfacing against the wrong side of your chosen fabric.
  7. Iron – Press the interfacing to the fabric according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Cut Precisely – Cut each shape exactly on the traced lines.
  9. Remove Backing – Peel away the paper backing.
  10. Center Background Fabric – Fold your background fabric in half lengthwise and crosswise to mark the center.
  11. Arrange and Fuse Shapes – Use your layout diagram (or your own design!) to position the shapes on the right side of the background fabric. Press to fuse in place.
  12. Stitch – Secure the shapes with a straight stitch, zigzag stitch, or decorative stitch around all edges.
  13. Finish – Quilt and bind as desired. Enjoy your one-of-a-kind appliqué design!

Make It Your Own!

Once you know the process, you can create your own templates and design completely custom projects. Think wall hangings with your favorite quotes, themed pillows, or seasonal table runners. Raw-edge appliqué makes it possible to translate your ideas into fabric quickly and beautifully.

The Quilt That Started Conversations in My Classroom

One of my favorite raw-edge appliqué projects is a quilt I made for my classroom. It reads “Everyone is Welcome Here”, and features handprint and heart shapes from my students. The process was approachable enough for my students to get involved, and the finished quilt now hangs in a spot where it sparks conversation every day.

I’ll share a photo of it here—it’s a perfect example of how raw-edge appliqué can turn fabric into a meaningful statement.
