TOUR: Missouri Star Quilt Co. in Hamilton, MO

Come with me as I walk from shop to shop, sharing what I saw, what I learned, and the surprises that ended up on my wishlist even though I thought I had everything a quilter could need. (Spoiler: I didn’t. ????)

This magical little town is Hamilton, Missouri, home to the world-famous Missouri Star Quilt Company. Founded in 2008 by Jenny Doan and her family, Missouri Star began as a small quilting shop with big dreams to bring life back into a struggling rural town. With the help of Jenny’s warm presence and easy-to-follow tutorials on YouTube, it quickly grew into the largest quilting destination in the country, drawing visitors from all over the world.

Hamilton has always had a knack for retail success as it is also the hometown of James Cash Penney. In fact, the building where he got his start as a young shopkeeper later became the 500th J.C. Penney store, and today it lives on as Penney’s Quilt Shop, a centerpiece of the Missouri Star family where you’ll find your favorite solid and low-volume fabrics.

Listed below are the shops and a short description of what you’ll find at each shop. Or, watch my video for a visual tour of Quilt Town:

Quick Facts/Fun Facts

Beyond the shops, Missouri Star Quilt Co. also runs a separate warehouse where all their online orders are processed and where you’ll find their longarm quilting services in action if you choose to have your quilts finished by them. The entire town is also incredibly pet-friendly. I saw several shoppers strolling through the stores with their dogs, and when I asked the staff, they said pets are always welcome as long as they’re leashed and well-behaved. Shops are open from 9AM to 5PM, Monday through Saturday, so plan accordingly for your visit!

Main Shop

The Main Shop is the heart of Missouri Star Quilt Co. and your first stop in Quilt Town. Inside, you’ll find curated notions, home goods, BLOCK Magazine, and irresistible treasures like quilt-themed teapots and tiny pink toolboxes. It’s the perfect sampler of what’s to come.

Quilts Handcrafted

Although it was closed during my visit, Quilts Handcrafted is believed to showcase professionally finished quilts. Let me know if you’ve been inside—I’d love to hear what I missed!

Retreat Center

The Retreat Center at Missouri Star Quilt Co. hosts overnight retreats for up to 33 guests and frequently features sew-along events with Misty and Natalie. It’s a dream destination for quilters looking to relax and connect.

Santa’s Sewing Shop

This holiday-themed shop keeps the Christmas spirit alive all year round. With Santa prints, ornaments, stockings, and festive fabrics, it’s perfect for anyone looking to bring handmade holiday cheer into their home.

Quilted Home

Blending farmhouse charm with DIY spirit, Quilted Home offers candles, soaps, embroidery supplies, punch needle kits, and cozy home decor. Whether you’re shopping for your space or gifts, this shop has it all.

Accessories & Such

Bag makers—this one’s for you! Accessories & Such features purse hardware, cork fabrics, Sallie Tomato kits, interfacing like Soft and Stable, and tools by Hometown Leatherworks. Don’t miss the maker’s corner in the back.

Penney’s Quilt Shop

Housed in the historic J.M. Hale building, where J.C. Penney began his career, this shop now features solids, basics, and low-volume fabrics organized by manufacturer. It also stocks Arrow sewing chairs and AccuQuilt systems.

Fabric Market

Once a butcher shop, the Fabric Market now offers fabric by the pound—yes, you read that right! Color-sorted scrap bins and adjacent walls of notions, including a lighted seam ripper and color-coded tools, make this a must-visit. Be sure to stop by Ella Jane’s Soda Shop inside for a treat.

JC Penney Memorial Library & Museum

This small museum honors Hamilton native James Cash Penney. He was born just outside of town in 1875 and helped put Hamilton on the map long before quilting did.

Licensed to Sew

Licensed to Sew is a novelty print lover’s dream, with themed fabrics ranging from farm animals to Star Wars, Dr. Seuss, and The Office. Perfect for adding personality to your stash or making quilts for kids (or fun-loving adults).

Machine Shed

Tool heaven! The Machine Shed features rotating cutting mats, lighted work surfaces, and rulers from Omnigrid, Creative Grids, and Stripology. They also sell BERNINA machines—hello, inspiration!

Man Cave

The Man Cave is a cozy lounge for non-quilting companions, complete with snacks, Wi-Fi, and comfy chairs. It even has two restrooms (though none labeled for women—so yes, I used one out of protest ????).

Upstairs Shops

Above the street-level shops, you’ll find seasonal fabrics, Tula Pink prints, and smaller collections. I picked up a giveaway item for my newsletter subscribers—be sure you’re on the list to join the fun!

Batik Boutique

Tucked in the back, the Batik Boutique showcases gorgeous hand-dyed fabrics and explains how batiks are made. These fabrics are known for their tight weave, double-sided prints, and wax-resist dyeing techniques that create vibrant, layered effects.

One Big Happy Yarn Co.

For knitters and crocheters, this is your spot. One Big Happy Yarn Co. is full of squishy, modern yarns for multi-craft makers. Whether you’re yarn-curious or yarn-obsessed, it’s worth the visit.

Town Murals + Woobles Truck

Don’t forget to explore the town murals and rest at the picnic tables near the shops. I was lucky enough to catch the Woobles truck while I was there—truly the cherry on top of my Quilt Town adventure.
