Easy DIY Coasters

I have a formula that can help you turn ANY small project into a coaster. Here’s what you’ll need:

Materials
(1) Pieced Top (any size) – this tutorial showcases my XMas Coaster FPP pattern.
(1) Backing with size that matches the top
(1) Piece of batting with 1″ overage on all sides of the pieced top

Here’s a video that highlights all the steps – see written instructions below.

1. Place the pieced unit right side up and center it on top of your piece of batting.
2. Baste and quilt the (2) layers as desired.
3. Trim away the excess batting.
4. Place the backing RST to the FPP unit and pin the layers together. The coaster should be inside-out.
5. Sew ¼” along the edge of the quilt sandwich, using a backstitch to secure the start of the seam. Stop sewing 2 ½” from where you started. Use a backstitch to secure the end of the seam.
6. Trim excess fabric from each of the (4) corners without crossing into the stitch lines.
7. Use the 2 ½” opening to turn the coaster right-side out, and gently push each corner out with your fingers.
8. Press the coaster with an iron. Fold and press the edges from the 2 ½” opening back towards the inside of the coaster, and pin or clip the layers together.
9. Topstitch: Sew â…›” along the edge of the coaster. Repeat steps 1-8 to make the desired number of coasters. Enjoy your coasters!
