Make the Speckles and Squares Quilt in a Workweek
Make a Quilt in a Workweek
Want to make a quilt – fast? But busy with a full time job? I gotcha! Making this Throw Size quilt top in a workweek is possible with about 1-2 hours of commitment per day – trust me as living proof! I went ahead and broke down the process below, which felt comfortably manageable to execute while working a 40+ hour workweek as a school teacher.
Quilting Habits that will Save Time
In addition to having your quilt top process divided into manageable chunks, I recommend some simple habits that will help you make this quilt top (or any other quilt top) quicker in a workweek and with a full-time job:
1. Chain Piece – Sew everything you need to sew in the least amount of sittings at your sewing machine as possible. Sew as many pieces together that are ready for sewing, and don’t cut your thread every time.
2. Ironing – to continue on with the idea of chain piecing, you want to be stationed at your ironing board once a day, and press everything that needs to be pressed at that moment.
Workweek Day 1: Cutting – That’s it, just cut.
We just want to do one thing today. Assuming you’ve already picked out your fabric, it should take about an hour or two out of your workweek to cut out all of the pieces needed for this quilt.
Workweek Day 2: Strip Piecing, Flying Geese Prep, and Other sewing prep
Today, we are stationed at the sewing machine, and going to sew everything that needs to be sewn together before first press. To start chain Piecing, sew the two smaller squares RST to the larger square for 4-at-a-time flying geese, sew the strips together to prepare for strip piecing, sew the two opposite triangles for square-in-a-square, and sew the smaller square at the large corner for stitch-and-flip piecing. If you have a few moments, press your strip piecing strips open and your square-in-a-square pieces open from the center pieces.
Workweek Day 3: Finish Flying Geese and Most of Block 1.
Follow the instructions in the pattern to finish Block 1, then sit down with a Netflix, Hulu, or podcast show and trim all of your flying geese.
Make a Quilt in A Workweek Day 4: Finish Block 1 and start piecing Block 2.
If this is a Thursday for you, you are probably ready for a break from your full-time job and are ready for the weekend! Unwind with some simple piecing at the sewing machine and pressing at your ironing station.
Workweek Day 5: Finish All Blocks and Assemble the Quilt Top
You’ve made it through an entire workweek, and have a quilt top to feel additionally accomplished for it =) Finish piecing Block 2, and piece the quilt top together to finish the quilt top in a workweek. Baste and quilt over the weekend as desired, and you’ve got a brand new quilt to share with a loved one or to snuggle with yourself. Enjoy!
